The Cervantes Cave is named after the famous Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, who took refuge there during his escape attempts throughout his five years of captivity in Algiers between 1575 and 1580. After a long period spent in the Cave, he was finally redeemed in 1580 with other Spanish prisoners and returned to Madrid. His years of captivity in Algiers seem to have dissuaded him from continuing his life as a soldier to dedicate himself to writing, particularly his work, Don Quixote de la Mancha.
