Australia: 8 Must-See Places Not to Be Missed

Australia is a country that tends to captivate dreams. Situated at the other end of the world, it is extremely vast and boasts incomparable flora and fauna, making it a truly appealing territory. Every year, many people choose to embark on the long journey to this remarkable country, whether for a grand road trip, to settle down for a year, or even to stay permanently. Once there, it can be challenging to know where to start given the multitude of options. Here’s a small list to help you not miss the essential sights of this gigantic nation.

The Great Barrier Reef

After purchasing your plane tickets and completing the online visa application process, you’ll finally be ready to board a flight to Australia, an incredible country. One thing that should definitely not be missed is the Great Barrier Reef. Known worldwide and unfortunately in great peril today, the Great Barrier Reef is considered the largest ecosystem on the planet. Visiting it to admire its beauty (while ensuring to respect the reef as much as possible to preserve it) is a chance to become aware of humanity’s impact on nature.

Uluru

Also known as Ayers Rock, this colossal rock is located in the heart of the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park. Considered a sacred site by the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal peoples, it was once open to the public for climbing. However, since October 26, 2019, tourists have no longer been permitted to ascend to the summit, as the site is under Aboriginal control from that date. Nonetheless, it is still possible to visit the park and admire it from below, which already provides an incredible sight.

Sydney

How can one go to Australia without making a brief stop in Sydney? For many tourists, it often serves as the starting point of their journey, instantly immersing them in the vibe of this amazing country. Globally famous, particularly for its iconic opera house, Sydney is a very cosmopolitan city, with no fewer than 250 languages spoken there. This metropolis by the ocean also offers breathtaking and unparalleled landscapes.

Kakadu National Park

Kakadu National Park is located in the northern territory and is sure to capture the hearts of tourists. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, this vast park spans over 19,000 km² and is home to an incredible array of wildlife: thousands of insect species, 55 freshwater fish, 25 amphibians, reptiles, 280 bird species, and over 60 mammals. Several Indigenous peoples still inhabit the area today.

The Great Ocean Road

Located on Australia’s west coast, the Great Ocean Road spans an impressive 243 km. Considered one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world, it indeed offers breathtaking views, both of the ocean and the surrounding cliffs.

Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island, aptly named, is indeed a large island located south of Australia, off the coast of Adelaide. Since half of the island has never been cleared of forests, its wildlife is extremely diverse and wild. While tourism is allowed, it is heavily regulated, and visitors are encouraged to act responsibly to help preserve the area.

Tasmania

Tasmania is an Australian state, considered the country’s main island. It is located 199 km off the southeastern coast and covers more than 68,000 km². Known worldwide for its famous “devil,” Tasmania has a very unique climate, particularly very humid. Interestingly, it was the place where, over 150 years ago, prisoners were left to “rot” due to harsh living conditions. Nevertheless, it is a must-visit destination in the country, thanks to its incredible landscapes.
